ISO 25119

The ISO 25119 series is an international standard that specifies functional safety requirements for control systems of tractors and machinery used in agriculture and forestry. It focuses on safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) — especially electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic systems (E/E/PES) — used in tractors, self-propelled ride-on machines, mounted or trailed agricultural machines, and even some municipal machinery (e.g. street-sweepers) where applicable. ISO+2ISO+2

By following ISO 25119, manufacturers and developers can systematically design, develop, test and maintain safety-critical control systems — thereby reducing the risk of malfunction-induced hazards and improving the safety and reliability of agricultural and forestry machinery over the entire machine lifecycle.

What is ISO 25119?

ISO 25119 provides structured principles and processes for:

  1. Identifying and evaluating hazards arising from malfunctioning control systems
  2. Determining safety functions and performance requirements
  3. Designing hardware and software to meet defined safety levels
  4. Ensuring safe operation, maintenance, and modifications

It applies to:

  1. Tractors
  2. Self-propelled agricultural and forestry machines
  3. Mounted, semi-mounted, or trailed machines
  4. Certain municipal machines such as street and park maintenance equipment

It helps manufacturers embed functional safety into equipment during initial development itself.

Structure of ISO 25119 – Parts & Scope

ISO 25119 consists of four parts:

  1. Part 1 — General Principles
  2. Introduces safety lifecycle concepts and requirements for the control systems
  3. Part 2 — Concept Phase
  4. Hazard identification, risk analysis, safety requirement specification
  5. Part 3 — Hardware & Software Development
  6. Requirements for design, implementation, verification and validation of electronic control systems
  7. Part 4 — Production, Operation, Modification & Support
  8. Ensures safety is maintained after production through operation, maintenance and changes

Why is ISO 25119 important?

  1. Control systems are increasingly critical and complex in modern agricultural machinery
  2. Failures of electronics or software can cause severe machine accidents and financial loss
  3. It provides an engineering framework to reduce system faults and ensure safe performance
  4. Helps manufacturers demonstrate safety compliance and meet global regulatory expectations
  5. Supports safe digital transformation — automation, sensors, and intelligent systems

What are the benefits of ISO 25119?

  1. Enhanced product safety and reliability
  2. Reduced liability and risk of recalls
  3. Technical competitiveness with high-quality machinery
  4. Global market acceptance and export readiness
  5. Standardization of engineering design and development processes
  6. Full lifecycle documentation supporting audits and customer confidence

What kind of businesses can benefit from ISO 25119?

  1. Improved operator safety from reduced malfunction risks
  2. Higher reliability in real-world use with fewer breakdowns
  3. Controlled maintenance and upgrades ensuring sustained safety
  4. Compliance with legal and tender requirements
  5. Cost savings from minimized accidents, downtime, and damage
  6. Better long-term asset value due to documentation and certified safety
